Rönnen i januari

IN ENGLISH:

This year I’ve decided to follow the rowan that grows in our parking lot, next door to the kindergarden playground. Since I spend most of my time at home while the pandemic continues to plague our society it’s convenient to follow a tree that grows where I live. Even though the rowan is a bird favourite there are still some shriveled, frozen berries left on the tree. Lately it’s been snowing so now the trees are covered in snow. Now in January it has suddenly become colder so it actually feels like winter, although the current temperature of -16°C is still about 15 degrees warmer than I would expect in January this far north. At this time of year we only have a few hours of daylight in the middle of the day. And that light is blue, not white.

Personally I prefer the warm winter weather that we’ve had so far this winter even though it’s unnatural. I’m not a big fan of cold and icy winters but since my current work keeps me here I have to endure them. The weather this winter has so far been about 10-20 degrees warmer than I would expect here given the ”normal” climate that I grew up with. Of course a rapidly warming climate is generally really bad news for people that live where it’s not freezing cold to begin with, and that’s the majority of the world’s population. That especially includes the producers of much of the food that I enjoy. Although I would enjoy getting rid of freezing cold winters I don’t want to have to sacrifice the availability of good food to accomplish it. So my wish for the new year is that we burn (and deposit in landfills) at least a little less stuff this year than we did last year.

  1. The rowan looks great with it’s snow blanket. Your winters make ours look a bit pathetic – I’ve been moaning about the odd frosty morning!

    Thanks

  2. What a pretty tree! Especially when frosted. We so rarely see freezing temperatures here in South Wales – recently it has reached -1 but it’s amazing that you think -15 is ”warm”…
I’m sure the children in that playground would appreciate your hopes that we can rein in global warming. Maybe this pandemic will make people think differently about the future.
Looking forward to the longer days for you – all the best 🙂

    1. Thanks.

I hope that this year of ”we don’t cancel, we change instead”, which has become a kind of pandemic mantra in Sweden, will trigger actual long term changes, but I doubt it. Usually people just want to forget that a pandemic ever happened and return to their ”normal” life as soon as possible.
