Alen i december

IN ENGLISH:

A few days ago cold, fluffy powder snow started falling so it looks like we’ll get a white christmas after all. This far north it’s very dark now. The photo of the alder tree, which is hardly even visible against the conifers behind it, was taken in the middle of the day but I still had to change the settings on my camera and turn up the brightness even more in the digital processing afterwards in order to get a photo that is not too shaky and is bright enough to see anything.

This was the last treefollowing post about the grey alder tree in Sikfors village. I will soon move to the regional capital Luleå because I will start a new job there next month so next year’s tree to follow will be somewhere in Luleå.

Fotot är taget den 11 december 2022.

  1. I’m pleased you will have a white Christmas after all.
The snow must make for a strange quality in the few daylight hours you do have up there in the north.
Here in Cardiff we are at just south of 52º and I find the short days depressing enough here.
Still, it will soon be the shortest day and then it’s uphill all the way to spring.
Thank you for thinking of following a tree again in 2023.
All the best for your move to Luleå! I hope we hear more from you about that.
    God Jul xxx

  2. I just checked the latitude of Sikfors … 65º, wow! So much darkness would be very hard, even our ”short” days bother me. Maybe this is why we have holiday celebrations this time of year.

    1. Yes, northern Scandinavia is at the same latitude as Alaska, northern Canada and northern Russia.

Thanks to the warm Gulf Stream the climate is much milder than it ”should” be at that latitude. But the latitude is what creates the great number of natural seasons and the drastic differences between them. People here are sometimes jokingly called sun worshipers because not actually seeing the sun for several months of the year makes people more or less obsessed with sunshine.

  3. We had snow here in Edinburgh yesterday but it’s all gone now, so we probably won’t have a white Christmas! (Though anything can happen of course). Your conifers are beautiful in the snow . Good luck with your new job.
