Now that the ground is completely covered by snow it can be a bit tricky to get to the rowan. Today the snow hadn’t been shoveled away from the usual path along the water from the hotel to the bridge across the frozen Varjis stream but I still managed to get to the bridge by taking a detour. On the ice by the bridge there were tracks from, among others, a hare. At least the path from the bridge to the rowan is a well-worn path even in winter. The rowan tree is once again covered in snow just like it was a year ago when I started following it.

Now it’s time to say goodbye to the rowan and to present next year’s tree:

Next year I will follow a bird cherry (Prunus padus). According to Wikipedia the same tree is also known as hackberry, hagberry or Mayday tree in English. At least I think it’s the usual native Swedish bird cherry. When it comes to trees that have been planted in parks it is hard to know for sure that they haven’t planted some similar, exotic relative, but this one is probably the usual, native bird cherry. Bird cherry grows throughout northern Eurasia but doesn’t, according to the distribution map above from Den virtuella floran, seem to grow naturally in North America. This bird cherry in particular is the middle one of three bird cherry trees that grow next to each other on a tiny park area in Älvsbyn. I chose the middle one because it has the coolest shape. The birds have eaten most of the fruits but some still remain on the tree.

The mean temperature in November was slightly above normal according to the Swedish Meteorological and Hydrological Institute (SMHI) (the figure above shows the difference between the mean temperature for November this year and the normal mean temperature in November).

  1. Thank you for showing us your rowan throughout the whole year, whatever the weather!
I look forward to seeing your bird cherry in spring – but even in winter it has a beautiful shape, with such smooth and shapely trunks.
I’ll say Merry Christmas for now 🙂

  2. hello Erika,

there is a lot of snow, it looks beautiful but I know it is cold and can make getting around difficult, the little rowan looks snug with it’s carpet of snow keeping it’s feet/roots warm,

the bird cherries look interesting trees with their many trunks, like the rowan providing good food for wildlife, Frances
