January up here was unusually warm for the Norrbotten region. Not recordbreaking warm, but definately warmer than normal. Where I live the mean temperature for January was 6 °C above normal.

Norrbotten county covers the northernmost 25 % of Sweden’s total area. Part of Norrbotten is above the Arctic Circle, and hence officially in the Arctic Region. The Arctic is heating up much faster than other populated parts of the world so this type of warm winters have in just a few years gone from being unusual exceptions to being the new normal winters. Since quite a few people here have businesses that depend on reliable cold and snowy winters not everyone is happy about this change.

When I visited the rowan yesterday it was sealed off together with the rest of the area along the edge of the rapid. The idea seems to be to try to prevent tourists from going out on the ice that stretches out over the water since it can get them killed. The barricade tape doesn’t seem to effectively deter the tourists though. When I was there I saw a couple of them that had crawled under the barricade and were photographing each other out on the ice right next to the open water. Their tracks in the snow are visible on the photo. To go that far out on the ice is stupid because most of the ice is not resting on solid ground. And you can easily take good photos while staying on the right side of the barricade tape.

Since someone hade made a little side path from the main path right by the rowan I was able to easily get close to the tree this time. That made it easy to take close up pictures of the rowan berries that are still left on the tree since last year.På vägen tillbaka till bilen vid hotellet tog jag några fler vinterbilder.

Walking back to my car by the hotel I took some more winter photos.

Of course the hotel at Storforsen offers kicksleds. The kicksleds even have their own parking lot.

Played with the filter function in Lightroom to give this photo of a hay barn located along the road from Älvsbyn to Storforsen an old fashioned look. I like the old hay barns that still stand out in the fields although hardly anyone use them anymore to store hay in.

Fotona är tagna 2017-02-04 i Storforsen, Bredsel.

  1. the warming is worrying, it is also said that the melting of the Artic is why we are getting more rain here, the warm water is travelling south,
your photos show beautiful scenery, Frances

  2. Thanks for adding the video, I had never heard of kicksleds. Beautiful scenery, I miss the wintry scenes we used to have here in town, not many anymore. We used to ski mid-winter on the snow-covered frozen Laramie River, near my house. But for at least 10 years it hasn’t been cold enough. And already spring weather today 🙁

  3. What a ”winter wonderland” you live in!
It’s so worrying that your climate is changing so much, though.
Those kicksleds look fun – I hadn’t heard of them before and had to seek an explanation online of how they work…
    All the best 🙂
